The study protocol was approved by the institutional review board of University of California, San Diego (UCSD). This study adhered to the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki, and written consent was obtained from all study participants.
Cataract Surgery
Surgeries were performed under topical anesthesia using a retrobulbar or peribulbar anesthetic, combined with intracameral topical anesthesia, when required. All surgeries were performed by the same experienced surgeon (AAK) using a standard surgical technique of small-incision phacoemulsification. The surgeons underwent an appropriate cataract surgical curriculum developed by the Ophthalmic Technology Education and Research Group.
