Sankara Eye Hospital) who performed cataract surgeries during the study period were contacted. We invited patients on a random basis from a list of patients who underwent cataract surgery from January 2012 to December 2012. Each patient was approached by telephone and asked about their compliance with the postoperative regimen, and a reminder was sent to those who did not comply.

The study protocol was approved by the institutional review board of University of California, San Diego (UCSD). This study adhered to the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki, and written consent was obtained from all study participants.

Cataract Surgery

Surgeries were performed under topical anesthesia using a retrobulbar or peribulbar anesthetic, combined with intracameral topical anesthesia, when required. All surgeries were performed by the same experienced surgeon (AAK) using a standard surgical technique of small-incision phacoemulsification. The surgeons underwent an appropriate cataract surgical curriculum developed by the Ophthalmic Technology Education and Research Group.
