Lumbar discectomy is also known colloquially as lumbar. Lumbar discectomy surgery is performed to remove herniated or degenerative discs from the lower part of the spine. In this, an incision is made to remove the disc pressing on the nerve with the help of back muscles. If physical therapy or medication is failing to relieve leg or back pain, and if you suspect nerve damage, weakness, or pain in your legs, a discectomy may be recommended. There are several ways to perform a discectomy. Many surgeons now prefer minimally invasive discectomy, which uses small incisions and a small video camera to view the procedure.
