All You Need To Know About Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer which is found in blood as well as in bone marrow. Bone marrow is the soft inner part of bone which produces new blood cells. Formation of these new blood cells is prevented when bone marrow is overcrowded by immature white blood cells. Due to its immaturity, they are not able to fight or prevent infection. Due to insufficient production of red blood cells and platelets by bone marrow, it is giving rise to anaemia resulting in bruising and easy bleeding. AML is also called as acute myelocytic leukemia, myelogenous leukemia, granulocytic leukemia and non-lymphocytic leukemia.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia Patients

Acute myeloid leukaemia treatment is performed mostly on adults and children. It is diagnosed most often among older people and is common in individuals who are above 65 years of age.

Risks & Causes of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

Cause for acute myeloid leukaemia in most cases is unknown, but some factors may increase your risk of developing AML. Risk factors responsible for AML are as follows:

  • Smoking
  • Being overweight
  • Consumption of alcohol during pregnancy

Signs & Symptoms of Acute Myeloid Leukemia

There are several signs & symptoms for AML which are however indefinite and non-specific in nature. Majority of people who are having more than one symptom for AML do not necessarily suffer from leukaemia. Some of these symptoms are as follows:

  • General weakness
  • Tiredness
  • High temperature
  • Regular infections
  • Easy bleeding
  • Weight loss
  • Pain in joints or bones
  • Breathlessness
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Feeling full in tummy
  • Pale skin

Treatments for Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

Primary treatment for acute myeloid leukemia is chemotherapy. Treatments other than chemotherapy which are used for treating AML are as follows:

  • Radiotherapy
  • Factors responsible for growth
  • Transplants of stem cell & bone marrow

When white blood cells in your blood are found to be high, then you may be diagnosed with leukapheresis. AML entirely removes unusual white blood cells from your blood. This would not have happened if they had M3 AML, also called as acute promyelocytic leukaemia. In this type of AML, it can cause bleeding.

Chemotherapy Treatment for AML

Chemotherapy is a treatment in which anti-cancer drugs are used to kill cancer cells. It circulates throughout the body in bloodstream. While having chemotherapy for AML, you will have to remain in the hospital due to the following reasons:

  • It is a demanding treatment
  • You may have some side effects, for which hospital staff will take care
  • You may need antibiotics which are injected into vein to fight infection

Recovery Following Acute Myeloid Leukemia Treatments

You will gradually increase your weight & feel much stronger than before. It would also take time to overcome a serious treatment like bone marrow transplant. You will have to go to the hospital once or twice for checkups. Moreover, slowly before a year gets over, you will realize that you are on the road to recovery. You will have at least one infection during your recovery period that would require hospitalization as well.
