Being the second most frequently transplanted organ after Kidney, Liver has a distinctive feature to regenerate. About 70 percent of this organ can be taken without anything to worry about and it regains its original size in 3-4 weeks.
Liver diseases are quite rampant around the world and very serious in nature and thus need medical attention straightaway.India has become an extremely sought-after treatment hub, when it comes to transplant procedures; particularly Liver Transplant in India is one of the most availed procedures by international patients.
There are three types of Liver Transplantation, which are:
Orthotopic Transplantation–In this approach, the damaged Liver is replaced with a healthy Liver. Once the Donor Liver is removed and preserved, it needs to be transplanted into the patient within a span 12 to 18 hours. During the procedure, the four primary blood vessels and other vital structures, that hold the Liver in place inside the abdomen, are dissociated from the damaged Liver. Once the damaged Liver is removed, the new Donor Liver is then connected, and blood flow is reinstated. The final link is done to the Bile Duct, a small tube, which that carries Bile from the Liver to the Intestines.
Heterotopic Transplantation – In this type of Liver Transplantation procedure, the healthy Donor Liver is placed at another place, whereas the damaged Liver is left as it is. This type of Liver Transplant surgery is chosen, when the surgeon thinks that the diseased Liver has a chance of recovering. The healthy Liver is positioned very close to the original Liver. If the old Liver recovers, then the other Liver shrivels away; otherwise the damaged Liver shrivels away, and the new Donor Liver takes charge of the body functions.
Reduced-size Liver Transplantation – Reduced-size Liver Transplantation is often done on children and involves transplanting a portion of the Donor Liver into a recipient. This surgery is performed when 15-20 percent of the original Liver is undamaged. Thus, one Donor Liver can be fruitful for two effective transplants.
