Stem Cell Therapy for Cancer Treatment Using NK Cells in India

Overview

Cancer is a condition where the cells in a specific part of the body grow and reproduce uncontrollably and this is a leading cause of death in the world. The cancerous cells can invade and destroy the surrounding healthy tissue, including the organs. Sometimes, it begins in one part of the body before spreading to other areas and this process is known as metastasis.

The causative factors of cancer include genetic abnormalities, radiation, toxic substances, etc. When the factor causing the cancer cells are overwhelmingly powerful against the immune system, the disease becomes full blown.

What are Natural Killer Cells?

The Natural Killer (NK) cells are a component of the innate immune system that has the ability to recognise infected, damaged or transformed malignant cells. They express the lytic machinery which is able to kill and target cells independently of any previous exposure to the cancer antigens. The main functions of the NK cells are to suppress the tumor cell initiation, growth and metastasis through the mechanisms mediated by perforin and the granzyme-containing the granule mediated death receptor.

What is AIET?

AIET stands for Autologous Immune Enhancement in which “autologous” indicate that the patient’s own immune cells i.e. Natural Killer cells are used. The serum used to grow the cells are also taken from the patient’s own blood. This approach doesn’t have any non-self component. It is the safest mode of treatment that has no adverse reactions such as allergy or rejection and no need for the immune suppressors. “Immune Enhancement” indicates the enhancement of the immune system by directly cultivating the isolated immune cells of the patients in the lab and transfuses to yield the best results.

4-Step Treatment Schedule

    1)     Peripheral Blood and tissue sample is collected.

    2)     The sample is sent to the laboratory for processing.

    3)     After processing for a specified number of days, the processed NK Cells and CTLs are        sent to the hospital where the patient is admitted for transfusion.

    4)     The processed cells will be then administered intravenously, after which the patient will stay under observation in the hospital for a few hours.

Advantages of Stem Cell Therapy for Cancer Treatment using NK Cells

The NK Cells will kill the MHC non-expressing cancer cells. AIET using the expanded NK cells may be very useful tool for cancer immunotherapy. The activated NK cells were shown to reduce the size of the breast cancer cells and the volume of ascities also inhibit the lung metastasis of pleural effusion lymphoma (PEL) cells.
