Unmatched Arthroscopic Knee Surgery in India

What is arthroscopic knee surgery?

Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure through which doctors look inside the joint to diagnose and treat problems. It is done with a small instrument called an arthroscope, consisting of a narrow tube attached with a fiber-optic video camera.

The surgeon makes a small incision of about 1-2 cm in size on a knee to insert the arthroscope and look inside to diagnose the cause and deformity. The video camera transmits high definition and magnified inside view of the knee joint on a big monitor to enable the surgeon to determine the type of injury, assess the extent of damage and perform surgery to repair the damaged knee.

Following diagnosis through arthroscopy, surgeons perform arthroscopic knee surgery for inflammatory conditions like synovitis i.e. inflammation of synovial membrane – the lining of the knee joint.

After determining the cause and extent of damage to the knee problem surgeon inserts specialized tiny instruments through other small incisions i.e. ports. These tiny instruments are highly specialized instruments for shaving, cutting, grasping, meniscal repair and also for anchoring stitches to the bones, if required.

On completion of the arthroscopic knee surgical procedure, the arthroscope and instruments are withdrawn. The saline poured into the joint tissues is also taken out with the help of a pump. Finally, depending upon the location of the surgery and surgeon’s preference, incisions are closed with staples, sutures, steri-strips or surgical glue.

Arthroscopic knee surgery is recommended when painful conditions do not adequately respond to non-surgical treatment and you continue to have stiffness and persistent joint pain. It helps ascertain the cause and extent of damage caused due to acute or chronic injuries and treat Osteoarthritis caused by cartilage loss in the Knee joint.

Common procedures performed through Arthroscopic knee surgery include:

  • Removal of loose bodies of bone or bone chips
  • Trimming of damaged articular cartilage
  • Removal of fragments of cartilage
  • Removal or repair of a torn meniscus
  • Removal of inflamed synovial tissue
  • Reconstruction of a torn anterior cruciate ligament
  • Removal of Cartilage tear
  • Treat Patella (Knee cap) problem

Arthroscopic knee surgery is a minimally invasive surgery that is performed by giving small incision causes less pain and blood loss while minimizing chances of infection and ensures faster recovery.

Is arthroscopic surgery painful?

Though pain is a natural part of the healing process yet some patients do feel some pain.

The pain after arthroscopic surgery may be due to:

  • Over-activity or spending excessive time on feet
  • Persistent Swelling
  • Infection
  • Inadequate Rehabilitation
  • Spontaneous Osteonecrosis
  • Arthritis in the Joint

However, pain can be reduced or relieved with anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs like NSAIDs and/or Opioid derivatives as per the advice of doctors.

How long does it take to recover from the surgery?

The patient’s recovery will depend on the type of damage in the knee and surgery performed. Most patients return to light activities in 1-3 weeks and resume all normal activities in 6-8 weeks. Recovery depends upon following the doctor’s instructions regarding medication, exercises, and activities.
